-By Dan Coultas
There aren't many songs in heathenry these days. The Thor song is popular, some kindreds have their own songs, and there are the songs that are in our prayer book, but overall there are not many. Whilst most of the songs that our heathen ancestors would have sung are lost, it is well known that singing featured heavily on the long nights spent around the fire.
So I think we should strive to bring the magic of song back to heathenry. Here is a little ditty that I have written to honour our seafaring ancestors, I hope you like it.
The Sea Still Calls to Me
In days of old, On rivers they rowed, Our ancestors sailed the sea. Oh times may change, But the Gods are the same, And the sea still calls to me.
In heathen days,
Following the old ways,
They crossed the cold North Sea.
To conquer new lands,
Our fate in their hands,
And the sea still calls to me.
In days of old,
On rivers they rowed,
Our ancestors sailed the sea.
Oh times may change,
But the Gods are the same,
And the sea still calls to me.
In the age of sail,
With strength they prevailed,
Exploring far and wide.
Protecting their kin,
With a will to win,
And the sea still calls to me.
In days of old,
On rivers they rowed,
Our ancestors sailed the sea.
Oh times may change,
But the Gods are the same,
And the sea still calls to me.
With ships of steel,
With courage and zeal,
They faced Europe’s darkest hour.
Facing perils below,
And determined foes,
And the sea still calls to me.
In days of old,
On rivers they rowed,
Our ancestors sailed the sea.
Oh times may change,
But the Gods are the same,
And the sea still calls to me.
And still today, Never far away, Are those who sail the sea. For defence, food or trade, They face perils each day, And the sea still calls to me.
In days of old, On rivers they rowed, Our ancestors sailed the sea. Oh times may change, But the Gods are the same, And the sea still calls to me.
